F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

You haven’t visited us yet but plan to do so? Learn how to navigate the library and search for books on the shelves and in the electronic databases.

What are your rules?

  1. The library is a space for reading and working. Please respect your colleagues and stay quiet.
  2. Only librarians can put books back on the shelves. When you finish working, please put your books on the table by the stairs to the second floor.
  3. If you need to eat, use a specially designated space in the recreational area right behind the front desk, by the lift, to do so. That way, you won’t distract anyone with noise and smells.
  4. You are allowed to drink water and hot beverages in any area of the study hall that doesn’t have computers or other equipment in it. Eating in the study hall is prohibited.
  5. We have two meeting rooms intended for group discussions, conferences, and calls. If you wish to book them, send a request to biblioteka@universitas.ru. State your full name as well as the date and time when the meeting will start and end. Remember, there can be no more than 3 people in the group and the meeting can’t last for longer than 2 hours.
  6. Readers aren’t allowed to install software on desktop computers.

How do I get to the library?

The MSSES library is located at the following address: Teatralnaya/Okhotny Ryad metro station, Gazetny Lane, 3/5, 5th floor, the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy building.

You can reach it two ways.

The first one is to enter the building (entrance with the “Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy” sign), turn left right after the checkpoint, and go forward until you reach a lift on your left. Take the lift to the fifth floor and you’ll find yourself at the library’s front desk.

The second one is to take the lift to the fifth floor right behind the checkpoint, go straight down the corridor, turn right, and follow to the end till you reach the door with the “Library” sign on it.

What is your schedule?

Monday to Friday from 10 am to 10 pm
Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm

The schedule is different in the summer. We inform Shaninka residents of the changes in our newsletter and the library's social media.

I want to contact the library! How can I do that?

We’ll gladly respond to your letters and calls.

+7 (495) 150-80-53

biblioteka@universitas.ru

We also have a Facebook page and a Telegram channel.

Is there Wi-Fi in the library?

Wi-Fi is available throughout Shaninka’s entire territory, including the library. You can look up the network name and password on the information boards at the library entrance and in the recreational area next to the study hall.

What can Shaninka residents do in the library?

The School’s students, graduates, teachers, and staff members are free to use:
  • the public book collection
  • remote access to a number of electronic resources
  • workplaces in the library, including meeting rooms

Also, users can attend Library Skills – a class on how to work with library resources that involves a tour. If you want to sign up for Library Skills, please contact us by email biblioteka@universitas.ru.

We organise tours for groups of 3 or more people.

How do I find the book I need in the library?

Use our catalogue. If you know what book you are looking for, you can search by title or author. If you are working on a subject and you want to see if the library has any books that can be of help to you, search them by keywords.

In order to learn where the book you found is located, you need to know its address – the shelf index. Every book in our collection has an index, which is always catalogued. The shelf index consists of two parts, a number and the first three letters of the author’s surname. The number represents a specific discipline. You can find tables with codes for all the disciplines at the front desk, by the catalogue computer, and on the study hall tables. For example, the code for Psychology is 150 and the code for Law is 340.

Bookshelves in the study hall form a letter “n”. Numbers in the shelf index increase clockwise. On your left, there are books with the smallest number in the index, and on your right, there are books with the largest one.

When you identify a shelf with a specific code, you will first see books in English and then in Russian. The book coded 150 ФРЕ will be placed further down the shelf than the book coded 150 GER.

If you can’t find a book, ask at the front desk and our librarians will help you out.

The library catalogue is constantly being updated but it doesn't always reflect the shelf situation accurately. If you are interested in a specific topic, see what is displayed on the shelf next to the books you found in the catalogue. Feel free to search through different shelves – books on your subject aren’t necessarily placed in the section that has a similar name to your faculty.

Also, the Bookmatedigital library allows Shaninka residents to read books from its collection when connected to the library’s Wi-Fi.

How do I get access to Bookmate?

You need to sign up for Bookmate from a computer connected to the library’s Wi-Fi. When you register on the computer, the subscription will activate in the mobile app as well. Bookmate books can be saved and read in the app offline.

If the app lags and doesn’t recognise your subscription, log out and log back in the app – it needs some time to identify the connection.

Can I take books home? For how long?

Shaninka students, teachers, and staff members can take up to 3 books home except for publications marked with a red or yellow sticker signed ‘Reference’ and periodicals for 1 week with the possibility of one extension for 1 week.

Please return the books on schedule. Otherwise, you are depriving your colleagues of the opportunity to work with them.

How do I take books home? Where do I report it?

Take the books to any employee at the front desk. You need to show your Shaninka grounds pass – it also serves as a library card. We will put the books on your account and remind you when it’s time for you to return them. After that, you are free to go.

How do I extend the keeping time without going to the library?

Send your request for an extension to the library’s email biblioteka@universitas.ru.

Can I access the library remotely?

The library gives students remote access to some of the electronic resources. Students of Shaninka and RANEPA’s joint programmes can use the Academy’s resources as well. If you wish to learn more about the available electronic databases and receive the authorisation data, contact us by email biblioteka@universitas.ru.

How do I log in the system on a computer?

Every Shaninka student has a personal login and password. If you forgot your authorisation data, contact the faculty administrator. You can also use the guest login and password – there’s a sticker with that data on every computer in the study hall. The guest account has no access to the student printer.

I want to talk to someone on Skype in the library. Where can I do that?

There are two soundproof meeting rooms in the study hall. You can use them for group work or a Zoom conference. You can book a meeting room by sending a request to biblioteka@universitas.ru. Please state your full name in the letter and tell us the date and time you plan to book the room for.

Remember:
  • there must be no more than 3 people in the group
  • the meeting can’t last for longer than 2 hours

Can I invite my friends to the library if they haven’t studied in Shaninka?

The library is primarily intended for Shaninka students, teachers, and staff members. In order to get to the library, readers from other institutions have to receive a recommendation from a faculty or the library director.
If you need to invite friends to the library, please contact us and explain the reason for the invitation.

I’m not a Shaninka student. Can I get a pass to the library?

Readers from other institutions have to receive a recommendation from a faculty or the library director. To contact the library director, Veronika Khomyakova, send a letter to khomiakova@universitas.ru and briefly explain why you want to visit the Shaninka library.

I’m a Shaninka alumnus. How can I get a pass to the library?

We are always happy to see our graduates in the library! To get a one-time pass, please send a letter to biblioteka@universitas.ru and fill in the form for graduates.

Can I print a document?

There’s a student printer on the catalogue table in the study hall. It can be accessed from the library computers in the study hall on the first and second floors. To print out a document, you have to log into a computer using your student account. If you forgot the login and/or password, please ask your faculty administrator for help.

Can I donate books to the library?

Of course you can! We are always happy to receive gifts. You can give books to any librarian at the front desk. The books will be added to our collection or the bookcrossing section.
