Экономический лекторий «Векторов»: Behavioral Welfare Analysis

The fundamental question for economics and adjacent fields is understanding the ranking/preferences decision maker have over potential alternatives. Revealing the preferences in the (neo-)classical models is straightforward. Upon observing choice from the menu researcher knows that chosen alternative is better than any other alternative that is available in the menu. However, the rise of behavioral theories of decision-making complicated the task drastically. In particular, most of the behavioral models assume two-stage structure of the choice. In the first stage the observed menu is modified and transformed in perceived menu. In the second stage, decision maker is choosing from the perceived menu. Thus, now the researcher can only make the claim that chosen alternative is better than every alternative in the perceived menu, while perceived menu is not being observed. We are going to discuss the new theory of welfare analysis that is necessary in order to reveal the preferences behavioral decision makers have.

Plan:
  • Neo-classical model of choice and welfare
  • Behavioral models of choice: select-then-choose or transform-then-choose
  • “Model free” approach to behavioral analysis
  • Welfare analysis under select-then-choose models
  • Welfare analysis under transform-then-choose models
